One of the reasons why I want to write about Ben’s spit cup is to highlight the depth of gratitude I have toward having a friend share in this journey with me. We never know what we will need, either emotionally or physically. When a problem arises and a solution is supplied, I want to reflect on it.
The Peel
The problem started just before Christmas. Ben got sick with bronchitis and has been coughing and spitting up an incredible amount of phlegm. (Gotta love it!) The poor guy was really good about spitting it out so he is nearly well after just a week. But, the highlight for him was that he had found the perfect spit cup. It was the right size, the right weight, and the right strength of grip. It was also a cup that I can’t get at any store. Ginny had given me a gift of a Daily Harvest frozen smoothie that she orders on-line.
Ben doesn’t want any other cup. He keeps dumping that one out and reusing it. I wouldn’t mind so much if he kept it in his room. But he carries it around and leaves it on the kitchen counter all the time. (Yuck! I had no idea about the variety of colors that phlegm can be!) I want very much to throw it away, but I dare not deal with the fallout of Ben’s anger when he discovers it is gone. Although, he is already upset with me that I haven’t found him a replacement.
The Fruit
Ginny, help! Ahhh. She understands and can relate. I’m not going insane just yet. And she can save her Daily Harvest cups for Ben for future spitting needs. (Yay! Thanks, Ginny!) You just never know how helpful a friend can be.
Reader friends, if you don’t have a companion to talk to who can understand what you are going through, it is worth the effort to find one. Join a caregiver support group, attend an Alzheimer’s Association class, or ask an acquaintance if they know of someone else going through something similar. Pray. You’ll be surprised by the ways a friend can help you!
